Surprise Party

Things never work out
the way I expect them to and
that's just life
giving me surprises
when I least expect it

Confetti bursts in my face
all the time when I walk around
and I've gotten so used to it
that now I just think,
"Oh, here we go again."

Sometimes I get gifts and smiles
and balloons and laughter,
but sometimes my face is shoved
into the cake sitting on the table
in front of me

Sometimes this party is tiring and
sometimes I just want to go home,
but other times the presents I get
and the people around me
make me laugh so hard that my
stomach and cheeks hurt and that
makes up for it all

I'm getting better at
taking the surprises each time
either way
